Halloween Sangria

It's just not Halloween without a spooky cocktail to get us through it. This red Halloween Sangria is made with blackberry brandy for a twist on the classic Spanish drink.

Sangria is such a versatile drink, and it's a very forgiving basic recipe. You want:

• wine
• brandy
• sweetener ( in this case, the type of brandy used also includes the sweetness needed )
• fruit

There are two questions I get asked the most often when talking about sangria...

What kind of wine should I use for sangria?

Pick a cheap, dry, red wine. I used an Argentinian Malbec because I wanted something a little heavier to stand up to the sweetness, but you do NOT need to get that specific and stress about this. Go to Trader Joe's, pick something red and under $10, and call it a day.

What kind of brandy should I use for sangria?

The answer to this one depends on the recipe. I use cheap domestic brandy for my regular sangria recipe, but this one specifically calls for blackberry brandy. Blackberry brandy is sweeter than normal brandy, and also adds a little more dark color. You can use DeKuypers, Hiram Walker, or if you wanna get fancy, Chambord (which is not blackberry brandy but would a be delicious substitute.)

Ingredients

• ½ cup blackberries
• ½ medium apple cored, skin on, chopped into small pieces
• ½ medium orange rind on, sliced into small pieces, large seeds removed . I used a blood orange for a little tartness and extra spooky flair
• ¾ cup fresh squeezed orange juice
• ½ cup blackberry brandy plus more to taste
• 750 ml bottle dry red wine Spanish or french Red Table Wine is perfect - don't use anything too expensive! Scroll up in the post to see my specific favorites
• 2 cups ice

Instructions

• Stir all ingredients in a large pitcher. Chill at least 1 hour or overnight, and serve.

Notes

For a lighter flavor, add 12 ounces of sparkling water right before serving.
